“I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.”–Audrey Hepburn
‘Tis 12:30 a.m. on the last morning of 2013 and I should be fast asleep. Yet I sit here, smiling still, cherishing the remnants of a lovely evening with a few close friends.
Re-living the many moments of being carried away by gut-busting laughter, I notice that my sides and back still ache a bit from the best workout there is: untrammeled laughing. The treasure of friendship I relished tonight is the best life has to offer. To be able to share honestly our dreams, our weaknesses as well as our triumphs, but perhaps most of all, to laugh until our backs feel as if joy will crack us open and re-form us, is a priceless gift.
That sense of unbridled joy and humor….such a relief! All of the stresses and frustrations and grief of the past many days: GONE. Spilling away and transformed in a radiant flood of laughter. I share the boundless gratitude of Audrey Hepburn for this extraordinary human experience.
To think: it is always available to us should we so choose, and it readily spreads to others and brightens all of our lives! Such potent medicine. As Charles Dickens wisely noted, “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”
Here’s wishing you the magic of laughter, joy and friendship to illuminate your path in 2014….
