Dance Is Here

Getting ready to go dance with a new-to-me group of folks at a new-to-me venue.

Will they and I be a good fit?  Will the movement and I dovetail in that magical and sometimes transcendent practice of dance?

I don’t know.

And although I hope so, even the mere prospect of being part of a movement community, of connecting to others and to something inexpressible, for a moment, has lifted me up today.  As it does every day I dance.

A practice and an offering that is both delving and uplifting.

If nothing else, tonight, among us, in that space and radiating out into the Universe, the healing, expansive and transformative power of dance.

The message: Dance Is Here. And here. And here….

“The dancer believes that his art has something to say which cannot be expressed in words or in any other way than by dancing…

NIK_5805

… there are times when the simple dignity of movement can fulfill the function of a volume of words. There are movements which impinge upon the nerves with a strength that is incomparable, for movement has power to stir the senses and emotions, unique in itself…

This is the dancer’s justification for being, and his reason for searching further for deeper aspects of his art.~Doris Humphrey

Thank you for sharing Doris Humphrey’s beautiful words on dancing–they inspire me to remember the dancer in myself, the feelings that can only be expressed through dance. And I love how you openly shared your vulnerability–asking if you will be a good fit with the new group. It’s amazing how much power is waiting to be expressed, waiting behind our willingness to be vulnerable, to let such an intimate part of ourselves be seen by others. Thank you again Chloe.

Yay! So happy to hear that Doris Humphrey’s words inspire you to remember the dancer in yourself, Lorien. The more of us dancing, the better! And thank you so much for your insightful and supportive observations. Indeed, it is “…amazing how much power is waiting to be expressed, waiting behind our willingness to be vulnerable, to let such an intimate part of ourselves be seen by others….” Shine on, lady. xxx

  2. Gorgeous photos, ST. They tell their own story!
I totally understand the excitement of the unknown with the new group and new place. I hope it was what you hoped for. xoxo

I so appreciate your showing up and offering your generous support. Yes, I’ve been thrilled with the photos Nikki took. Rather than merely being a record of the dancing, they’ve provided me some new fuel for ideas. Hope your summer is going really well, Elysha…and that you and your family have been able to keep as cool as possible! xxo
